My favorite Part
As my second novel launches on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, I am realizing something interesting about myself and this entire publishing process. I think I now know what my favorite aspect of this publishing roller coaster has been.
Receiving a publishing contract, releasing my first book, and having my first book signing have all been unbelievable moments in my life, there is no doubt. But the part I am finding that I love as much or more than any other moment is something much smaller. You see, the part I love most is when someone contacts me and tells me how much they have enjoyed what I have written. It means a lot to me. I mean A LOT.
I’m not talking about reviews as much, though I love good reviews, I’m talking about when someone goes out of their way to let me know how much they liked my story. In fact, I save all of the emails. As people comment to me where they are in one of my stories, I sometimes pull up the book on my computer just to refresh my memory as to what is coming next for them. I get excited when I know they are about to read one of my favorite sections, or a see a big surprise, or just finish the book in general. I’m kind of goofy that way.
This brings me to another point which I believe relates. There are two main reasons that I write books, neither of which are for money. The first reason is that there are stories in my head needing to be told and there is nothing I can do to shut them up except put them on paper. (OK, that kind of makes me sound insane, but let’s pretend I’m not for a moment.)
The second reason, and most important, is that I write to entertain people. I’m sure all authors would say the same thing, so I’m not being particularly revolutionary here. But it is true. My ultimate wish is that a million people read and enjoy my work—much more than I care about the riches that would come from such success. (I mean, I’ll take them, don’t get me wrong.)
And that brings me to Rhemalda and one of the reasons I love them so much. As an author I have unbelievable say in every aspect of my book, which I believe is very important for any author. In fact, I had an issue with the finished product once and the folks at Rhemalda went way out of their way to correct it which, trust me when I say, wasn’t at all easy or cost-effective. But they bent over backward so that I would be happy.
Though I can’t promise that everyone will fall in love with my writing style or my stories since every reader enjoys different styles, but I will promise that I will always do everything in my power to make sure a quality product is always associated with my name.
And luckily for me, Rhemalda feels the same way.
So, if you wanna own a werewolf, or at least read about what would happen if you did, check out my new story, Tamed. It’s being called “better than the Twilight books,” but then again, my mother is the one who said that.
It will be available … well … now actually.

I’m with you, Doug, in that the most important aspect of writing, for me, is pleasing readers. Yes, the money success would bring would be lovely, but it’s not my goal or desire. What I yearn to see is people getting the same feelings, the same intense pleasure and involvement out of my novels that I had while writing them. Receiving emails that tell you how much a complete stranger enjoyed your book is the absolute pinnacle of writing for me.
And I totally agree with you about Rhemalda. None of this would be possible without them, we are so fortunate to have found them and to belong to this beautiful family of talented people!
I’m looking forward to reading Tamed and will leave you a review once I’m done.
xx
I couldn’t agree with your sentiments more, Doug. I had a bounce in my step for a week when I received a card in the mail from a lady who enjoyed my first novel. For me, hearing positive feedback makes all the long hours of writing and editing worthwhile. How lucky we are to have such an amazing publisher who understands how we feel.
I have to admit that one of my favorite parts of being an author is having people go out of their way to tell me how much they enjoy my work. It truly is a magical thing. Truly. I save all those emails and look at them when I’m feeling down. Rhemalda is so great to work with, I agree! They care SO much about each and every book and the authors. It is truly great to be here.
That photo is amazing Doug, as is the post. I can’t wait to read Tamed!
